The archival tour at the Main Library of CUHK
Last month, students from TRAN 2120 had an incredible opportunity to dive into the rich history of translation with Prof. Sophie Ling-chia Wei and the librarian, Katherine Chu. The archival tour at the Main Library of CUHK took the students to go through the fascinating manuscripts of Jesuit translations from the 16th and 17th centuries.

We explored the remarkable works of Athanasius Kircher’s China Illustrata (1667) and Confucius Sinarum Philosophus, translated by the talented Jesuits Philippe Couplet, Prospero Intorcetta, Christian Wolfgang Herdtrich, François de Rougemont, and others, published in 1687. These texts offer a unique glimpse into the cultural and intellectual exchanges between East and West during that era.

The students had a fantastic time uncovering the stories behind these translations and understanding their historical significance. The tour was not only educational but also filled with fun and adventure as they delved into the past and connected with the translators’ journeys.
