BA(Translation) - JD Double Degree
Jointly offered by the Department of Translation and the Faculty of Law, the BA(Translation) - JD double degree is a highly flexible option designed to prepare students to qualify as practising lawyers while leaving the door open to other career choices along the way.
1. Basic Structure
After completion of the first degree, BA(Translation) students may continue directly on to the Juris Doctor (JD) graduate degree programme, thus earning two degrees in five years (the "3+2" model). Students who wish to gain work experience after completion of the first degree may defer entry to the JD for up to three years.
2. Tuition fees (at current year levels)
BA(Translation) degree: HK$42,100 x 3 years = $126,300 JD degree: HK$3,000 per unit x 72 units = $216,000
3. Study Scheme
Students will complete the first degree BA (Translation) before beginning the second degree (Juris Doctor). Students may continue directly into the JD programme after they complete the BA(Translation) programme, they may defer entry to the JD for up to three years, or they may opt out of the second degree altogether. Students will be awarded the degree of Bachelor of Arts after successful completion of the first three years, and the degree of Juris Doctor after successful completion of the subsequent minimum two years of full-time study.*

Note:
- Only Major courses which are at 3000 and above level will be included in the calculation of the Major GPA for degree classification assessment.
- Students are also advised to take 4 units of Putonghua courses, 3 units of Chinese Writing Skills courses offered by the Department of Chinese Language and Literature, and 3 units of English Writing Skills courses offered by the English Language Teaching Unit, preferably in the first two years of attendance.

In addition, students are required to complete the requirements from the University on general education, college general education, language, and physical education, etc.
Admission Requirements to Double Degree Option
The Department of Translation and the Faculty of Law will select students normally from among its first-year students in the Translation Programme.
In the first degree programme, students selected to the double degree option are required to complete the following two courses:
- SLW1020 Hong Kong Legal System, and
- SLW2030[1030] Legal System of the PRC
Double degree students who complete the first degree do not need to go through a separate admissions process for their second degree. However, admission to the second degree will be contingent upon the following conditions: (1) students must receive first or upper second honours in the first degree, and (2) students must have passed all their undergraduate courses without exception.
2. Requirements for J.D. Programme (Second Degree):
| The Juris Doctor programme consists of 72 units. Students may complete the programme in full-time mode* in a minimum period of 24 months or they may take up to 48 months. |

4. Course Load
In addition to following the Major requirements of the Department of Translation (i.e. 54 units), students will be required to take between 6 and 12 units of undergraduate law courses (to be specified by the Faculty of Law) in their second and/or third year of undergraduate study.
5. Admission Requirements
The Department of Translation will select students for the double degree option from among its first-year BA(Translation) students. Students may apply at the end of their first year of study.
Selected students who complete their first degrees do not need to go through a separate admissions process for the JD programme. However, admission to the second degree will normally be contingent upon the following conditions: (1) students must receive first or upper second honours in their first degree; and (2) students should normally have passed all their undergraduate courses.
6. Career Prospects
Law firms, government services, domestic and international non-government organizations (NGOs), as well as other translation, legal drafting and language-related professions.

LLB - BA(Translation) Double Degree
Jointly offered by the Department of Translation and the Faculty of Law, the LLB - BA(Translation) double degree is a highly flexible option designed to prepare students to qualify as practising lawyers while leaving the door open to other career choices along the way.
1. Basic Structure
LLB students will earn an undergraduate degree in law in the normal four years plus, after an additional year, a Bachelor of Arts degree in Translation (the "4+1" model). Those who decide not to take the fifth year will graduate with the LLB degree and (subject to completing a specified number of courses) a Minor in Translation. Students who need time to pursue other career options after completion of the first degree may defer the second degree for up to three years.
2. Tuition fees (at current year levels)
LLB degree: HK$42,100 x 4 years = $168,400 BA(Translation) degree: HK$80,000
3. Course Load
Law students are asked to take translation courses starting from their second year of study. Students who choose to continue on to the BA in Translation programme are required to take two translation projects and seven electives in their fifth year.
4. Admission Requirements
Law students may apply for the double degree option towards the end of their first year of study. For details, please consult the Faculty of Law.
5. Career Prospects
Law firms, government services, domestic and international non-government organizations (NGOs), as well as other translation, legal drafting and language-related professions.

Doctor of Philosophy
(Full-time/Part-time)
A. Admission Requirements
In addition to the general qualifications required for admission to
the Graduate School, applicants should have a Master's degree in
Translation or in a related field. In the latter case the Division
may require the student to complete preliminary coursework at
graduate level. Applicants are required to submit a 5-page research
porposal on or before the application deadline and attend an interview.
All applicants must also fulfil the 'English Language Proficiency
Requirement' as stipulated by the Graduate School before being
considered for admission. Please refer to the website of the Graduate
School for details.
B. Study Scheme
Applicable to students admitted in 2004-05 and thereafter
1. Course Requirement:
Students are required to complete a minimum of 24 units of courses for graduation. If the Division deems it necessary, a student may be required to take specific courses as prescribed by the Division.

Master of Arts in Computer-Aided Translation
A. Background
In view of the fundamental changes that technology has brought
to the translation process and the relevant demands from industry
and professional organizations, the Department introduced
a two-year Master of Arts in Computer-aided Translation in 2002. The programme
aims to deepen students' understanding of the workings of language
as an essential tool of communication and equip themselves with
the knowledge of translation technology.
B. Admission Requirements
Candidates for admission should meet all the qualification requirements of the Graduate School such as a Bachelor's degree or equivalent from recognized post-secondary institutions.
Applicants will be interviewed as part of the admission process. Past academic records, work experience, references, and language abilities will be considered in the admission exercise.

A. Admission Requirements
Admission requirements for the undergraduate full-time Translation programme is Grade E or above in AS Level Chinese Language and Culture and Use of English, and at least 2 AL or 1 AL and 2 AS Level subjects. Applicants should also have Grade E or above in at least 7 HKCEE subjects including Chinese Language and English Language.
