Freshman Sharing | Translation as a Bridge for Communication
While recruiting local students, the Department of Translation also welcomes applications from mainland Gaokao candidates and international students who are interested in translation. This year, the department admitted several students through the international admissions channel. We invited these students to share their backgrounds and experiences studying in the department. Below is a reflection from Nancy, Zhu Xulenan:

“I’m Nancy (Zhu Xulenan) from Hefei, Anhui, and I am a first-year translation student at CUHK. I graduated from the Canadian High School of Hefei No.1 High School. A pivotal moment that inspired me to pursue translation occurred when I volunteered at a school sports meet, where I interpreted between a foreign teacher and a Chinese classmate who didn’t speak English. Seeing them communicate smoothly made me realize that translation is more than language conversion; it’s a bridge for human connection. After that, I started watching clips of conference interpreting on short-video platforms. I became captivated by how interpreters facilitate global communication and cooperation. This passion solidified my decision to major in translation.

Ultimately, I chose CUHK for its strong Translation programme. My studies and life at CUHK have been very fulfilling. This term, I am enrolled in two core courses: TRAN1030 Introduction to Interpreting and TRAN1010 Principles of Translation. In class, our teachers share their expertise generously, and because classes are small, they answer whatever questions we ask with patience and care. Outside of class, CUHK organizes various activities that allow me to meet peers from diverse cultural backgrounds. This multicultural environment is especially valuable for understanding intercultural communication and for learning translation well.

Looking ahead, I have a rough plan in mind. During my first two years, I’ll try my best to hone my translation skills. In my third year, I hope to go on an overseas exchange to experience other cultures and broaden my perspective. In my fourth year, I’ll make the most of CUHK’s internship opportunities to apply what I’ve learned and prepare for my career. I am excited to continue growing, step by step, within CUHK’s vibrant Translation community.”

If you, too, are passionate about translation and eager to explore the power of language, consider applying to the CUHK Department of Translation. We look forward to welcoming you to our community.
