Freshman Sharing | From Translation Reader to Translation Student
The Department of Translation welcomes local applicants, mainland Gaokao candidates, and international students. This year, several students joined via international admissions. We invited them to share their backgrounds and experiences. Here is a reflection from Jenny:
“I’m Jenny from Changchun, Jilin, and I’m a first-year translation student. I graduated from the International Center of High School Attached to the Northeast Normal University. My passion for translation started in middle school, where I read a lot of translated fiction and often wondered how translators could preserve meaning while maintaining the author’s unique voice. This curiosity deepened when I participated in international competitions with my classmates and translated a speech for the first time. Those experiences helped me realize that translation is not just about words—it’s a bridge that connects cultures. That realization inspired me to pursue translation and led me to where I am today.
This semester, I’m taking two required classes: Principles of Translation (TRAN1010) and Introduction to Interpreting (TRAN1030). At first, I didn’t fully understand what interpreting involved, but each class has made it more fascinating. Our teacher breaks the process into clear steps and gives us plenty of hands-on practice. In Principles of Translation, I struggled with self-doubt at first—real translation challenges made me question my abilities. Thankfully, our instructor’s patience and clear guidance have boosted my confidence. Outside of class, the program is more diverse than I expected, and just chatting with others reveals so many amazing stories.
Looking ahead, I plan to take things one step at a time. This year, I’m focused on learning basic translation skills. As I progress, I want to explore different areas of translation to discover what excites me most and find opportunities to apply what I’ve learned through real-world experience. I’m excited to continue learning, improving, and embracing the opportunities that come with every step of this journey.”
