From classroom to practice: a visit to LegCo and the Official Languages Division
On 25 March 2026, members of the MA in Translation Programme at The Chinese University of Hong Kong visited the Legislative Council Complex and the Official Languages Division (OLD) of the Civil Service Bureau, HKSAR Government. Led by Ms. Jiang Hong, Mr. Harry Haoran Wang, and Prof. Sophie Ling-chia WEI, the visit offered students a valuable opportunity to witness professional language services in an important public and institutional setting.

The programme included a guided tour of the Legislative Council Complex, observation of a Council Meeting, and a visit to the Official Languages Division. Students also attended a presentation on “Working as a Simultaneous Interpreter in the HKSAR Government” and joined a Q&A session, gaining a deeper understanding of the demands, responsibilities, and significance of interpreting in public service.

We are especially grateful to Chief Simultaneous Interpreter Ms. Sharon Man and Simultaneous Interpreter Ms. Flora Chung for their generous sharing and professional guidance. Their presence made the visit especially meaningful, allowing our students to learn from experienced practitioners working at the highest level of government interpreting.

This visit was not only a valuable learning experience, but also a powerful reminder that interpreting is closely connected to public communication, civic participation, and multilingual access. We are proud of our students for their enthusiasm, professionalism, and thoughtful engagement throughout the visit.
