CUHK Campuses Collaboration
Professor Douglas Robinson, a prominent scholar in Translation Studies and Head of the Division of Intercultural Communication at The Chinese University of Hong Kong (SZ), visited the Department on March 12, 2025, to deliver the Yau Shing-yue Lecture in Translation. His presence not only strengthens the academic ties and deepens the collaboration between the two campuses.

In his lecture, titled “The Strange Loops of Translation,” Professor Robinson suggests by contrast that sense-for-sense translation compels translators to discern the true intentions of the source author, intertwining the inner worlds of both author and translator like intimate partners. Conversely, he notes that radically stylized literal translations, including homophonic translations, create a dynamic tension between the author and translator, akin to an old married couple that often argues yet remains together out of familiarity.
