After studying simultaneous interpreting for two semesters, we took part in a one-week internship at UNOV. For us, this was more than just a way to put a year of learning into practice – it was also an opportunity to step into the booth, gain insight into the daily work of professional interpreters up close, and continue building our skills through hands-on experience.

During the internship, we attended meetings of the UN Committee on the Peaceful Uses of Outer Space (COPUOS). In preparation, we explored the Committee’s website to familiarize ourselves with the session’s themes and agenda, as well as discussions from previous years. Preparing vocabulary and expressions was definitely useful, but once we were in the booth, we realized it wasn’t enough. Interpreting at the UN takes not just expertise but also sustained focus and a steady mindset. Only with that concentration and composure can we grasp the essence of each speech and pass them on accurately and clearly. And of course, mutual support with our partners is just as important. Working smoothly in the booth isn't only a solo effort – it works best when there's real teamwork. Whether it’s prompting your partner with terms or switching over at just the right moment, seamless coordination is key.

After the session, we were lucky enough to talk with experienced UN interpreters. They gave us a fresh look at the interpreting market today and the trends shaping its future, particularly the impact of AI on the profession. For us, it was a reminder that to grow in this industry, we must stay current, adapt, and keep building our edge.

Experience is the best teacher – it was this week at UNOV that really brought everything we learned to life. This trip not only put our skills to the test but also set us on track for what comes next. From here, we aim to practice, progress, and perform at our best.
