Freshman Sharing | Finding My Way at CUHK
| The Department of Translation welcomes local applicants, mainland Gaokao candidates, and international students. This year, several students joined via international admissions. We invited them to share their backgrounds and experiences. Here is a reflection from Cindy: |
| “Hi! I’m Cindy, a Year 1 student from Singapore. Before university, I studied Creative Writing for Television and New Media at Singapore Polytechnic. I learned to write for TV, film, documentaries, and journalism—but the more I studied, the more adrift I felt. There’s that saying: “Don’t turn your passion into your job.” If you do, you might end up hating what you love—and that was happening to me. After graduating, I had no idea what to do next. |
| During that slump, I weighed my options. One thing I knew for sure: I’m into languages. So I chose Translation. When I researched programs, CUHK was the first to catch my eye—strong program, interesting courses. I applied, got in, and here I am! |
| This semester I’m taking Principles of Translation and Introduction to Interpreting. Both are engaging, and the professors are kind and supportive. They made everything feel less intimidating. Principles pushes me to examine how well I really know both English and Chinese. I’ve also picked up common strategies for translating in both directions. Interpreting trains me to think faster and more critically for accurate on-the-spot rendering, and I’ve learned techniques professionals use. |
| So far, I’m keeping up well, thanks largely to time-management. Tip: put every class and deadline in your calendar! As for the future, nothing’s set yet. If there’s one thing I’ve learned, it’s that life will surprise you no matter how prepared you are. Plan ahead—but leave room for life to happen.” |
