Freshman Sharing | From Passion to Profession: My Journey in Translation and Beyond
The Department of Translation welcomes local applicants, mainland Gaokao candidates, and international students. This year, several students joined via international admissions. We invited them to share their backgrounds and experiences. Here is a reflection from Sofia:
I am Sofia from Macao, a freshman majoring in Translation. Before embarking on this new journey at CUHK, I had studied in an English-medium school for 12 years. Many might have asked – Why are you still choosing translation as your major in this era of AI? It’s my family background and personal interests that sparked my passion for translation. Growing up in a bilingual environment, I’ve always been fascinated by how languages connect people. On top of that, I love watching films from all over the world, where subtitles and good translation are essential for understanding and enjoyment.
Macao has always been a trading hub for European countries, and I believe it will continue to play this role in the future. That’s why I’m confident that interpreters will still be in demand. Language is the key to communication, and breaking down language barriers can bring people closer together and strengthen global connections.
Right now, I’m taking two core courses for my major: TRAN1010 Principles of Translation and TRAN1030 Introduction to Interpreting. These two courses help me develop professional skills while deepening my understanding of the field. The teachers are passionate and always eager to help us, which makes the learning experience really inspiring.
Looking ahead, I hope to join an exchange program to gain new experiences and perspectives, and I plan to apply for internships to build both my soft and technical skills. After graduation, I aspire to work as a court interpreter or specialize in legal translation. I’m excited to turn my passion for languages into a meaningful career where I can make a real difference.
