Our Graduate Completes South Africa Internship at ORIBI Incubator, Empowering Township Girls and Advancing Social Innovation
Hi! I’m Capri, a recent graduate of CUHK Translation. I’ve just completed my overseas internship, a two-month journey with ORIBI Incubator in South Africa, an impact incubator that cultivates social innovation. As a Programme Officer Intern, I co-hosted an entrepreneurship training workshop that supported high school girls from townships to develop confidence in their ideas. I also conducted a review of marketing strategy for the organization and shadowed administrative tasks with the Food System team, gaining a broader view of how community-based innovation connects to systemic change. |
This internship, as the final chapter of my university life, brought together the experiences and passions I have built throughout my years in university, focusing on program coordination, social impact, and cross-cultural dialogue. I’ve always seen translation as more than words — it is a mindset for bridging cultures. This perspective enabled me to adapt quickly to workplace culture and to design plans and presentation styles tailored to the audience, whether in a professional setting or during a training workshop. It also reminded me that communication, at its core, is about expressing yourself in ways that others can truly understand, without compromising your confidence in your own culture and identity. |
In translation studies, we often speak of adjusting the balance between domestication, foreignisation, and cultural sensitivity. I came to see this not only as a technical strategy, but also as a mindset that helps us thrive in foreign workplaces and intercultural communication. The same awareness that guides a translator in choosing words becomes the awareness that allows us to navigate cultural differences with confidence and empathy. Even if not all Translation graduates go on to work in the translation industry, this wisdom of bridging worlds and communicating across differences is something the Department has given us to carry into our lifelong journeys ahead. |
