| Hi! I'm Capri, a year 4 student majoring in Translation. I have been volunteering with Time Auction, a charity that advocates volunteerism, since February 2023. As a volunteer social media translator and copywriter, I draft and translate volunteer recruitment posts from English into Chinese, which are then shared in WhatsApp groups and Instagram. I also create Chinese blog posts to enhance the charity's website's search engine optimization (SEO) performance. |
| I began volunteering in 2020 and have served as a program coordinator or manager at various non-profit organisations. My experience in volunteering has greatly influenced my work as a translator and copywriter, which requires careful consideration of the most appropriate tone for volunteer recruitment posts and effectively conveys the needs of each non-profit organization while ensuring the posts are attractive to potential volunteers. Creating Chinese blog posts has also provided valuable opportunities to practice my copywriting skills outside classrooms. In class, I may aim to showcase my translation skills and produce a readable translation. However, in real-life situations, it is crucial to conduct thorough research and adopt the most suitable tone and expressions, especially by using keywords that can better achieve the SEO goals, even if it means compromising fluency slightly. |
| Volunteering for over 60 hours with Time Auction throughout 2023, I am delighted that my efforts have been recognized with the Swire Trust Go-Givers Award 2023. Volunteering as a translator provides an excellent opportunity for me to enhance my writing and translation skills. After all, it allows us, Translation students who are eager to practice our translation skills, to gain valuable insights and work experience that can be included in our CVs haha! |
