Field Trip to Legco
On March 13th, our interpreting students and teachers made an enlightening field trip to the Legislative Council (LegCo). In the morning, we had the privilege to sit in on a LegCo session, witnessing the intense discussions among legislators up close. We were enthralled by the stellar simultaneous interpretation from Mr Jackie Fu, former Chief Interpreter of the Hong Kong SAR Government, and other Cantonese-English interpreters, experiencing firsthand the complexities of professional interpreting.

By noon, we were warmly welcomed at the Official Languages Division of the Civil Service Bureau of the Hong Kong Government. We listened to Ms. Sharon Man, Chief Simultaneous Interpreter, and Edmund Cheung, Staff Interpreter, who shared their invaluable work experiences. Their practical advice on interpreting skills and career planning was a treasure trove for our students, who eagerly engaged in the Q&A session that followed.

In the afternoon, we returned to the Legislative Council Complex for a guided tour of the building. The highlight of our day was meeting with Mr Andrew Dawrant, AIIC member and veteran interpreter, and Mr Jim Brown, a leading figure in interpretating and an expert on Sino-American relations. Their insights added to the depth of our learning experience.

This field trip was more than just a visit to the Legislative Council; it was an immersive journey into the world of professional interpreting, revealing the nuanced blend of challenge and fulfillment that comes with the job. For all visitors, it was an immensely valuable and enriching experience.
