About the Workshop:
This workshop invites perspectives on the phenomenon of popular reception in relation to multimodal translation in all its forms. In the context of Web 2.0 and digital convergence culture, various types of multimodal translation circulate across media and genres, targeting different readerships. Multimodal translation serves as the glue holding convergence culture together. How readers receive multimodal translation in the digital milieu is a pressing question, largely uncharted in translation studies. By focusing on popular reception, we distinguish it from professional reception, which dominates the field. We critically examine the role of popular readers in forming interpretive communities around media texts with translational elements. This workshop emphasizes the significance of popular reception in translation studies, aiming to analyze how popular readers create alternative meanings and engage in civic or political online activism. It seeks to understand the role of popular reception in constructing today's popular culture.
