Words as pictures - Southwest Chinese Naxi manuscripts
Professor Duncan Poupard from the Department of Translation, The Chinese University of Hong Kong, has been working with a team of translators and anthropologists on the cataloguing and deciphering of Leiden University Library's Naxi manuscript collection. The Naxi manuscripts hail from a remote part of southwest China and can only be read by local ritual specialists. This blog post introduces some special features of these exciting texts that are written in a script that has been described as the "world's last living pictographs".
