The Naxi manuscripts from southwest China are often touted as being written in the world’s “last living pictographs”. The vivid, pictorial nature of the Naxi dongba script has spurred scholarly interest in the Naxi and their written traditions for over a century.

The study of Naxi manuscripts is an international endeavour that requires collaboration between scholars from around the world across a variety of disciplines. This workshop is the continuation of last year’s inaugural International Workshop on Naxi Manuscript Studies. This year, we aim to increase the scope of the workshop and invite more participants while retaining a focus on early-career researchers who share an interest in establishing the nascent field of international Naxi studies. Aside from presentations on a variety of topics, the workshop will feature a roundtable discussion and promote recent publications in the field.

If you would like to join us and make a presentation, please send an abstract (200 words) to jcw@ecnu.edu.cn by June 30th, 2023. This will be an online workshop held via ZOOM and all are welcome to attend. If you wish to register as an audience member, please contact jcw@ecnu.edu.cn with your name and affiliated institution.

Potential areas of discussion:
  • • Digital approaches to the study of Naxi texts
  • • Newly discovered manuscript collections
  • • Interdisciplinary approaches to Naxi manuscript studies
