On-site CI practice at CUHK Art Museum
On April 10 TRAN1030B students had the opportunity to put into practice their consecutive interpreting (CI) skills at the Art Museum of CUHK. They were able to test their interpreting skills in-situ at an exhibition featuring the collections of the Art Museum. Students were divided into two groups, each led by a docent who introduced the exhibits in Cantonese. Students took turns interpreting the introduction into English for the “clients” who did not understand Cantonese. The “clients” were actresses hired to play the role and were strangers to the students, thus creating a genuine communication gap that required interpreting, making the simulated role play more real.
