2023-24 MA graduate Cheuk Yin: From Professional to Professional
| Hi, this is Lochlan Cheuk Yin, an MA graduate from the class of 2023-24. Starting this September, I will be studying for my Juris Doctor (JD) degree at CUHK Law. |
| For those who believe artificial intelligence (AI) has “killed” translation, it is only sensible to look elsewhere. I could have walked away a year ago since I had been accepted into the JD program before the MA classes began. Still, here I am today. I am not staying to learn how to fight AI because it is not comparable to humans. Machines are lifeless, as are their translations. Lifeless translations only lead to ineffective communication. As professionals, translators are trained to make communication work across different fields, and that is what I want to accomplish. |
| Translation stands as a profession as it takes skills and meticulousness. The contract you rely on to safeguard your rights is a result of the translator’s exhaustive checks, double-checks, and even triple-checks, ensuring nothing therein would turn into a legal loophole. With specialized training, translators can work in anything, be it art, publishing, business, or law. I am particularly grateful for the two legal translation courses the department has offered, as they have given me a taste of what lies ahead and reassured me I am on the right path. |
