Graduate Sharing - Jayson Chan
I have been studying at the Department of Translation at CUHK since 2018, beginning as a Bachelor of Arts student. After graduation, I am pursuing a Master of Philosophy (MPhil) degree here, with a research focus on lyrics translation, particularly Cantopop song lyrics translation.

During my undergraduate studies at the department, I received comprehensive practical and theoretical training. This not only built my confidence in translating but also provided me with a taste of academic research. The department strongly encourages students to explore fields beyond traditional translation. Consequently, incorporating my passion for music, I decided to embark on a new journey as a research student.

My research on Cantopop lyrics translation lies in a relatively new area within Translation Studies. It requires substantial effort in gathering information and applying relevant theories to construct sound arguments. As I approach my second year of MPhil studies, I see improvements in my logical thinking and problem-solving skills, alongside doing primary data research and writing academic essays. I aspire for my dissertation to contribute meaningfully to both academia and the pop music industry in Hong Kong, inspiring more industry insiders to consider translating their work and promoting the unique music genre of Hong Kong.

In complement to my research, I am started my journey in the Cantopop music scene as a songwriter, arranger, singer and multi-instrumentalist. These experiences have provided me with valuable insights into the Cantopop music industry, offering new perspectives as an insider that enrich my research. For instance, my experiences as a songwriter have given me a deeper understanding of the creative process, which I can apply to my analysis of Cantopop lyrics.
