Prof. Sophie Ling-chia Wei, Harvard-Yenching Institute Visiting Scholar 2023-24
Welcome to Prof. Sophie Ling-chia Wei (Department of Translation, CUHK Translation ) as she returns from her 10-month enlightening journey as a 2023-24 Harvard-Yenching Institute (HYI) Visiting Scholar at Harvard University.

Together with 28 other colleagues, Prof. Wei had the invaluable opportunity to engage with scholars from diverse disciplines around the world. The scholars convened to deliver talks and hold workshops, exchanging ideas from their research specialties and building connections. In addition to the intellectual discourse, Prof. Wei expresses her sincere gratitude for her mentor, Professor James Robson’s guidance.

Prof. Wei’s Harvard Yenching Talk, “A Sage Embellished with Elements of ‘Chinoiserie’: The Making of Jesus in the Jesuit Figurist Translations of Chinese Classics”, was a perfect chance for her to showcase her research on the Jesuits Figurists’ translations of the Yijing and the Dao to the academic community of the Boston area, especially to scholars at Harvard.

Moreover, Prof. Wei also co-organised the interdisciplinary workshop Encounters of Civilizations in East Asia from the 16th to the 18th Centuries with other scholars. Their genuine and intimate camaraderie had lasting impact, fuelling them with passion for future workshops and cooperation.

Besides the packed schedule of presentations and workshops, Prof. Wei and her colleagues enjoyed trips and outings organised by the Institute. Reflecting on this re-invigorating ten-month journey, she describes, “Harvard University is a veritable forest of treasures, and the Harvard Yenching Institute provides me with the right paths to the right trees.”
