From CUHK to Oxford: Our Graduate Ivy Pui Yu Chan's Transformative Journey
My journey from CUHK, where I earned a BA in Translation in 2023, led me to the hallowed halls of the University of Oxford, where I had the privilege of pursuing a master's degree in applied linguistics. |
My time in Oxford, though brief, was a transformative experience. I was fortunate to study alongside brilliant minds from around the world, learning about rigorous research methodologies and engaging in stimulating discussions both in and outside the classroom. The program opened my eyes to the world of statistics, deepened my understanding of sociolinguistics, and ignited a newfound passion for L2 motivation. The department's emphasis on practical applications constantly reminded me that our theoretical explorations were not confined to an ivory tower but were aimed at solving real pedagogical challenges. |
Among the many gifts Oxford bestowed upon me, the most remarkable was undoubtedly the friendship of my cohort. Just as much as we locked ourselves in libraries and rose to spontaneous presentations, we spent equally long nights cycling through the city, exploring the vast expanse of Port Meadow, and battling it out in spirited games of Smash. Many of my friends had prior teaching experience, and their noble characters, both as educators and as individuals, continue to inspire me. As I embark on my own teaching journey at a local school this year, their friendship will serve as a constant source of motivation, urging me to grow both personally and professionally. |
